Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) refutes a false report that circulated in Argentine news media outlets in relation to an alleged forensic expert the Commission was said to have sent to conduct a forensic analysis on the body of Santiago Maldonado.

The IACHR has monitored developments regarding the Santiago Maldonado situation in the context of Precautionary Measure 564/17, granted on August 22, 2017. The last working meeting that the IACHR held with family members and representatives of Santiago Maldonado and representatives of the State of Argentina concerning this precautionary measure took place on October 26, during the 165th session of the IACHR in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The IACHR has not sent, nor has it evaluated the possibility of hiring or appointing or sending any forensic expert to Argentina, whether in the context of the events related to what happened to Santiago Maldonado or any other situation.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
